Stephen Horlander has posted the PSD used to create the toolbar buttons for the upcoming Firefox release as well as some insight into its layers and effects. Grab a copy if you enjoy digging into how different people create high-quality buttons.

I use Layer Effects all the time when doing work like this. It’s the driving reason I want Adobe to make it an actual panel instead of a modal dialog box. It’s great to see how others use Layer Effects in their work.

Closeness of Actions and Objects

Things I learned from reading Jacob’s post on this:

  1. Jacob has a friggin’ huge display.
  2. He likes to maximize utility apps, like iTunes, perhaps just to prove a point.
  3. Jacob sometimes makes good points.
  4. He likes pointing out usability issues more than offering up suggested solutions. That would be more interesting to me. (See Tog for more.)

All this aside, I have to agree, not one of Apple’s shining UX design moments. The simplified badge and modes of the iPhone succeeds in notifying and prompting app updates far better.

Edward Tufte Presidential Appointment

I was lucky enough to attend one of Tufte’s presentations in the late 90’s. What an amazing person that truly inspires you especially if you’re a designer. It’s great to see him be appointed to help the White House.
