Where Did Lighting Effects Go in CS5?

Last week I was searching and searching for the Lighting Effects in Photoshop CS5. I thought, “Surely, they couldn’t have taken away a crucial filter”. Well, today I decided to Google it and found where one of my favorite filters had gone. It’s been left behind in 32 bit mode world. Thanks Adobe.

Plug-ins not supported by Photoshop CS5 on Mac OS, running in 64-bit mode:
  • Lighting Effects
  • Extract (Use Refine Mask under the Selection menu)
  • Variations
  • Web Contact Sheet II (Web Photo Gallery)
  • TWAIN support works on some scanners
  • Video Preview
  • Send Video Preview to Device Firewire
  • Firewire DLL
  • Legacy Droplets

I had no idea this existed in Photoshop. It takes a list of files or folders and places each one on it’s own layer in a new document.

I’ve been looking for something like this.

So Photoshop CS5, what's in it for me?

I recently posed the question if any other web/ux designers were a bit underwhelmed by CS5’s feature list.

While I still wouldn’t file most of these as major features for web/ux designers, it’s a good list of niceties for designers all around.

The fun part about this is that it makes my life so much harder. More CS4 crash reports.

Adobe Ideas for iPad

This free app helps you sketch out ideas, annotate photographs, extract color themes from photographs, and more. Sketches created in Adobe Ideas can be emailed as a PDF for editing in Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop or viewing with any PDF viewer.

Pretty cool to see Adobe testing the waters of a content creation app on the iPad. Sure, there’s Photoshop.com Mobile for iPhone but that app really just allows you to edit your photos not create new content from a blank canvas.
