If Fireworks had started as an Adobe app or they actually brought the good parts of Uncle ImageReady over (like the UI and PS compatibility), I’d be right there with you.
Fireworks: wow, running a VM and a vector graphics engine just to get out of programming 5 check boxes and an arrow chooser. At least they accepted Flash isn’t up to the task of emulating a native UI though and just made something awful instead.
I believe this UI has been around for some time. You start understanding why longtime Adobe users are turned off by Fireworks. The devil is in the details Macromedia, urm, Adobe.
