Installing the original Creative Suite in 2011.
I often mention to friends that my favorite version of Photoshop was probably 7. It had pretty much everything I needed and nothing I didn’t. Here I am finding myself installing the original Adobe Creative Suite on my daughter’s iMac so she can use it. It’s sad that none of the current offerings (Photoshop Elements, Pixelmator, etc.) really worked for what she was looking for and I realized that digging into my old installers was the way to go. Plus what great nostalgia as I watch the old installer splashscreens go by.
I use Adobe Web Premium CS5 now at work everyday. But if you asked me the standout features that made it worthwhile to upgrade, I couldn’t really tell you. I know one version was that they added the ability to hit the Delete key to delete a layer in Photoshop. That was my favorite feature for one of them.
So watching as this installer loads up and seeing that Photoshop still has it’s own browser instead of the abysmal Bridge, I may have to change my opinion that Photoshop CS was my favorite. We’ll see.

Wrong! The problem with Global Lighting starts when you are working as part of a team and your PSD’s are coded or worked on by a different member of this team. That person may have their default Global Lighting set to something different, or better yet, they mistakenly (or not) change it.

The irony is lost on Adobe Updater. I’m surprised it doesn’t ask me to quit the Updater app to continue, which I’ve seen Microsoft Office ask me to do.

Fireworks: wow, running a VM and a vector graphics engine just to get out of programming 5 check boxes and an arrow chooser. At least they accepted Flash isn’t up to the task of emulating a native UI though and just made something awful instead.

I believe this UI has been around for some time. You start understanding why longtime Adobe users are turned off by Fireworks. The devil is in the details Macromedia, urm, Adobe.

Where Did Lighting Effects Go in CS5?

Last week I was searching and searching for the Lighting Effects in Photoshop CS5. I thought, “Surely, they couldn’t have taken away a crucial filter”. Well, today I decided to Google it and found where one of my favorite filters had gone. It’s been left behind in 32 bit mode world. Thanks Adobe.

Plug-ins not supported by Photoshop CS5 on Mac OS, running in 64-bit mode:
  • Lighting Effects
  • Extract (Use Refine Mask under the Selection menu)
  • Variations
  • Web Contact Sheet II (Web Photo Gallery)
  • TWAIN support works on some scanners
  • Video Preview
  • Send Video Preview to Device Firewire
  • Firewire DLL
  • Legacy Droplets

Jacob Bijani:

I had no idea this existed in Photoshop. It takes a list of files or folders and places each one on it’s own layer in a new document.

I’ve been looking for something like this.

Illustrator CS5 is lovely but Adobe still needs competitors

I couldn’t agree more with the points Jon makes. One of the worst things is when Adobe bought Macromedia.

Flash is a cross platform development tool. It is not Adobe’s goal to help developers write the best iPhone, iPod and iPad apps. It is their goal to help developers write cross platform apps.

Adobe Photoshop CS5 - Streamlined creative reviews (via CS5ORG)

Great feature but something tells me most creatives will use it as much as they use Version Cue and Share My Screen features.

Crashed On Quit Again
The fun part about this is that it makes my life so much harder. More CS4 crash reports.
