My PS3 Short List of Games
A few of my friends recently went ahead and picked up a PlayStation 3 and seeing how I’m an avid gamer and had a PS3 for a couple of years, I offered to send them my short list of game recommendations. I think it’s a pretty good list so I figured I should share it with everyone. Please let me know what you think and if you have any recommendations of your own.
Here’s my “short” list of PS3 recommendations:
UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves - Game of The Year Edition
…I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Uncharted. Think of the best parts of the Indiana Jones character with a diverse third person shooter adventure (like Tomb Raider but decent controls) in great locales. Uncharted 2 takes all this to another level.
…I’m a mythology fan and really enjoyed God of War on the PS2. Now you can get all three on the PS3 and they’re amazing. Pretty gruesome and brutal at times but the gameplay is fun and the visuals are stunning. A friend at work bought a PS3 just for GofW3.
…I played this game way after its shelf life (over a year) since the developer kept putting out great updates to the game. It’s a fun, smash ‘em up/stunt car game with tons of depth and fun vehicles.
A great sandbox type game with fun missions and sense of freedom as you gain super powers over time. It’s a lot of fun and I squeezed as much enjoyment I could out of this one.
The Orange Box with Half-Life 2 and Portal
…I’ve played The Half-Life 2 series about three times through now. It’s one of my favorites. It has an incredible sense of space and scenery. It’s a shooter at its heart and has some bloody parts but still so much fun. To top it off you get Portal in the collection which is a great mind bending puzzler. Portal is fine to play around the kids but I wouldn’t play any of the others games in the collection around them.
…this game is one of those random, hardly known games but it’s pure, unadulterated fun. Blow stuff up, drive different vehicles (cars, planes, boats, helicopters, etc.), grappling hook, and parachute anytime you want. It’s a great sandbox game. I guess it’s closest to what people say is great about Grand Theft Auto but I could never get into GTA. This game gets right to the fun, no question about it.
Batman Arkham Asylum Game of the Year Greatest Hits
…it took me a few times to get into this game, but I kept going back to it since my friend recommended it to me. I’d say try InFamous first but if you’re a Batman fan and like a little sneaking around this is a pretty good game once you get into it, especially if you’re a Batman fan.
Playstation 3 Rock Band 2 Special Edition
…a bit of extra change to get up and running since you have to buy all the instruments but this is a fun party type game. We have friends that come over and we play with them from time to time. I haven’t got into Rock Band 3 yet but I really liked Rock Band 2. This one depends totally on how much you think your friends and family would enjoy it.
Available to Download on PSN:
PixelJunk Shooter
…Pretty much all the PixelJunk games are fun but these are my favorite. Shooter really plays with elemental mechanics in a Asteroids-type shooter. A great two player game too. It’s only fault is it’s a little short, but they’re fixing that with a brand new Shooter 2 coming soon. PixelJunk Eden is interesting too. A bit too trancy and abstract for me at times but worthwhile downloading the trial and checking out.
PixelJunk Monsters
This is a tower defense type game but a completely different take on it. You get to walk around and set your towers anywhere and the artwork and music is great. A great chill out game.
Wipeout HD
Another great upgrade from PlayStation’s past. This used to be the defacto standard if you wanted to show off your new HDTV and what the PS3 can do. It’s visually arresting and great music. It’s a futuristic racer with weapons (think Mario Kart meets Blade Runner). Super stylized and fun. It takes some time to get used to the controls but fun to play regardless.
Flower
If PixelJunk Monsters is a great chill-out game, then this game is serene without question. It’s a very zen kinda game where you control the wind and try to make petals cluster and bring flora and fauna to life. Pretty interesting and really underscores what I’m saying about the type of unique titles the PS3 has to offer.
Most if not all of these games should have a demo available from the PlayStation Store. Hopefully my take on the games helps you decide which ones are most interesting to you. The PSN Games you can buy right from the store and some of the major games are even available to buy from the store, like InFamous, God of War Collection, and Burnout Paradise.
